Now is the season for drinking the lovely spiced cider, and for gathering of friends and family. There is something that gives us continuity in our lives- be it the odd snatch of “Silver Bells” on the overhead PA, or the smell of a Christmas tree in a lobby. I myself love the old Wassail songs, and one of my favorite tunes is that of Gloucestershire Wassail, and the chorus goes “Wassail, wassail all over the town-Our toast it is white and our ale it is brown- Our bowl it is made of the white maple tree

I could go on and on about the traditions involved in Wassailing, (the Wassail King and Queen, the offerings, and so on.) It’s lovely and fascinating stuff. People did not only Wassail each other, but sang and toasted Wassail to their Apple Orchards and Bee Hives. (A not so secret revelation. Some day I hope to have my own little hobby apple farm, and press my own ciders. And have my own bee’s. Sigh. Some day.)
