Another Day, Another….

So this weekend, I’ll be out at the Shouting Coyote festival up in Sunland-Tujunga, doing some storytelling, MC-ing, and stage managing. The festival producer is Joe Dicenzo, the Poet Laureate of Sunland-Tujunga, but previously with one of my all time favorite bands, Sheer Pandemonium. The band seems to have ridden off into the sunset, but the music lingers on. Sigh. My Son, darling boy, went to his first Basketball practice last nite. He’s a little unclear on the concept, but funny as heck. As he ran around doing the laps, with a stitch in his side through clenched teeth “MUST WORK THROUGH PAIN…MUST WORK THROUGH PAIN” Now mind you, he’s six and half. I need to get him to realize that talking and running are counter productive.

I did most sports growing up, but was marginally successful, and have no interest in pro-sports. I think it will be the Universes biggest joke, if my son grows up to be a jock….{where have I gone wrong…son, read more sci-fi? Wanna play boffers?} but I will be dutifully appreciative and supportive. It is going to be rough on him, since most of the kids his age have brothers and sisters, and have been playing for a while now. Plus, he’s the only anglo kid in the group, so he stands out a bit. Hang in there RJ, papa’s rooting for you….!

I’ll be heading out to Vegas on Monday, in case anybody wants to link up with me out there.

Home again, Home again….

Well, after a whirlwind tour of NAB. (National Association of Broadcasters Convention), probably the third biggest convention in vegas, after CES and Comdex. What a hugely dunning experience. Millions of Alpha males, all talking in very intense ways, quietly, while surrounded by billions of dollars of the highest tech broadcast equipment. From connectors, to monstrous broadcast trucks, and software so cutting edge you need safety gloves to walk by it. Loong, lonng lines for everything. I have returned. I fortunately got a chance to hang with my friend Darcel, and her beau Rob, after a long absence. They were great fun, and hospitable in every way. We checked out the startrek themed resteraunt. It was loud, and probably the coolest thing was seeing a very noble white haired Klingon surveying the masses with resigned disdain. An elegant figure with his walking stick. I give the actors credit, it’s got to be hard doing it day after day after day. I think while at the convention, I made some interesting contacts, both in and out of the broadcast and storytelling world. Was it worth the schlep all the way to Vegas? Only time will tell. On the way back, the wind was howling and blowing the rental all over the freeway, and pretty much the whole way from Vegas was a “construction” area with photo cop machines, and doubled fines. What the heck is the point in living in the west, with it’s long, long visible freeways, if we have to drive at 55 for 300 some odd miles? Gone are the days when we jumped into the caddy, and dropped the hammer. Now I get to recover for oh, say, two minutes, and then do e-mails, work on the three hundred projects, and oh, I’m flying back to Vegas on Monday to meet some very intense foreigners. Stay tuned….
I’ll have info on my coming classes soon!

The river of story, the flotsam of media

So I’m researching my article about Biddy Early. (For the Irish News) Jose/Angelo did some brilliant artwork by the way- if you need line art- he’s a genius, but I digress.
Check out the article on my site…
Back in 87 my hero, Eddie Lennihan was researching Biddy Early, and aside from the fact that folks were reticent about talking about her. (After all the fairies she dealt with are still around….) He talked about the generations who were grandkids of the folks who knew her. Before the advent of television, old folks in old folks homes actually sat around and talked.
